How to Measure a Balustrade: Centreline Vs Overall

3 years ago 0 category Knowledge Centre

Measuring your balustrade is extremely important as we manufacture the systems to your specifications. These bespoke designs rely on accurate measurements from yourself or one of our surveyors.

This guide contains the top tips to ensure that you give us the correct measurements for us to make your bespoke system.

We ask that you measure the outside edge of the area where you wish to place your balustrade.

Outside/Overall Measurement

The distances around the outside edge of the base area to which the balustrade is being fixed to.

Centre Line Measurement

Measure a balustrade beginning from the centre of the balustrade post running through until the centre of the last post on that particular run. Note: In the case of our Frameless system the centre line runs through the centre of the Aluminium channel shoe. When fitting your balustrade, you will need to know the centre line measurements of your system so you can use them to place your posts and fit the system correctly.

Take a look at our example diagrams below.

The Professional system centreline starts in the middle of the first post and ends at the centre of the last post, while the centreline for the Frameless runs through the middle of the channel shoe.

Once your SHS order has been processed you will receive a drawing for approval. Please note some of our drawings show centre line measurements. So, if the measurement appears smaller than the overall measurement provided, it is because we have made deductions to calculate the centre line of your system. Your overall measurement will stay the same.

Now that those pesky lines are all measured you can read on.

Professional, Elegance & Wire Rope Systems

Our standard base plates for these systems are 120mm in diameter, 125mm when the cover is on. Therefore the distance from the centre of the post to the edge of the baseplate is 62.5mm, but when marking out/installing your posts we always allow for a 75mm gap from the edge as shown below:

Infinity & Square Systems

Our Square and Infinity base plates are 100mm in diameter. Therefore the distance from the centre of the post to the edge of the baseplate is 50mm, but when marking out/installing your posts we always allow for a 60mm gap from the edge, as shown below:

Frameless System

We allow 35mm when we calculate the centre line of our aluminium channel shoe as shown below:
