Glass and Steel Juliet Balconies

Juliet balconies are growing in popularity across the UK: but what are they and what can they offer a home or business?

What is a Juliet balcony?

The Juliet Balcony – also known as a Balconet, Balconette, Juliette or False Balcony – is a railing that is placed across a raised window or door opening to create a balcony effect.

They look like this:

They’re a simple and elegant way to transform the interior and exterior of a property.

The name ‘Juliet Balcony’ is a little misleading – it is taken from the famous scene in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, though a balcony is not actually mentioned in the play (Juliet merely ‘appears at a window’). What’s more, balconies of this kind were not in use until after Shakespeare’s death. We still think it’s an appropriate name for a beautiful feature!

Why are they popular?

Balconies are understandably popular and desirable, but require space, usually an extension, and are therefore very expensive additions.

Juliet balconies enable homeowners to add a balcony to their property without the additional expense and can be achieved without extending the building and, therefore, without requiring planning permission in most cases. There are exceptions, such as if you live in a conservation zone or if the balcony has a floor, no matter how slim. You may only be permitted a Juliet balcony at the rear of your property. It’s always worth checking with your local planning authority before proceeding.

What are the benefits of a Juliet balcony?

Juliet balconies can add light, air and the illusion of space to any upstairs room. They can add value to a property and are appropriate for both domestic and commercial/office uses.

They are also totally safe: the glass we use is our 42.4mm diameter stainless steel rails, wall fixings, side-fixed brackets, glass clamps and 10mm-thick, clear, Toughened Safety Glass.

Are there limits to the size?

Yes – the maximum width for a Juliet balcony is 2 metres. Also bear in mind that a Juliet balcony might not be compatible with other exterior features such as protruding windowsills.

Are Juliet balconies easy to maintain?

Yes! Very easy. The glass panels just require regular cleaning with warm water and a standard glass cleaner, while stainless steel elements can be cleaned simply with soap and water or are stainless steel cleaner.

As with any windows, we tend to recommend cleaning your glass and stainless steel at least once a month to prevent excess build-up of dirt, which could become tougher to remove with time.

Like any other surface, stainless steel needs some maintenance.

Stainless Steel – A routine cleaning of light soiling, using soap, detergent or dilute (1%) ammonia solution in warm clean water will be sufficent. Apply with a clean sponge, soft cloth or soft fibre brush then rinse in clean water and dry.

Glass – routine cleaning with warm water and regular glass cleaner will prove beneficial. We advise monthly wipe downs to keep your balustrade sparkling.
